Short History of Timor-Leste – The Political Situation

The short history of Timor-Leste is a historical examination of the events that have occurred and developed over the past couple of centuries. Here I have gathered some key points on the political situation in Timor-Leste based on my reading of the documents, books and other literature on this subject.

So, as a writer, I used this as a backdrop in a number of my earlier works.

The political situation in Timor-Leste today is one of a federation which has broken away from Indonesia. Since 1996, there has been a stalemate, and the International Criminal Court has begun proceedings in The Hague. To set the record straight on these matters, the current government of the country has taken a hard line stance.

In the recent years, one of the most important developments has been the emergence of more democratic tendencies within the Timorese population. All groups have played a part in bringing about the political balance.

The political situation in Timor-Leste is very much in flux and it is not an easy task to place all parties into a single box. However, one of the major parties has made it to the National Parliament (NPS) by virtue of coming second in the recent elections.

The ‘Timbuktu Party’ was founded by Ibrahim Musa Al Mahdi, who has won large numbers of votes in his country of origin – Tunisia. The other main parties are ALLEG, UMDA and JAN (the Greens).

The governorship will be held by a woman, who has been elected by the people, who wish to serve in government.

Her first appointment will be that of minister of education.

With these various changes occurring in the government, one thing is certain – the whole governmental structure is looking very different. One can see a marked change in the way things are being run, and it appears that with this election the political power will be a lot more equally distributed.

There are many other topics that need to be discussed in the context of this government, but for now let us focus on one of the biggest – family-related problems. The government has taken steps to remedy such problems, and what has been produced is a series of events which will provide a model for the future. Business problems can be solved by board management software.

There are many other issues to be discussed, but I want to concentrate on the democratic aspect of the process. With regard to this, there is no doubt that it is also very important to note that the courts, the legislature’s sponsors are all popularly elected.

Another area that needs to be addressed in the short history of Timor-Leste is the problem of rampant corruption and the phenomenon of nepotism. Corruption has plagued Timor Leste in recent years, but in some cases the politicians have tried to address it by introducing legislation which has introduced accountability.

As I’ve noted before, when you look at the history of Timor-Leste, it is always very interesting, because there is such a wide range of political conditions and issues that have developed through the years. The lesson is that it is always possible to draw lessons from the past and then apply them to the present.
